3 Interior Design Tips to Turn Your Garage into a Productive Work Space

One of the most commonly overlooked areas on the front facade of any home is the garage.

A home’s overall curb appeal is generally based on how the entire home itself looks, not just part of it and a garage makeover is rarely considered.

Oftentimes, the garage can be treated like other parts of the home, such as the garbage can and children’s toys in the yard. Here are some useful garage design ideas that can help increase your home’s overall curb appeal.

Switch Up the Layout

First consider taking some time to evaluate how your things are currently placed around the garage, and identify ways you can rearrange them to make the space feel more open while not losing out on home storage space.

Think about moving bulky items such as workbenches and exercise equipment to the corners of the garage to keep the long walls accessible for possible cabinet and shelf installation.

While rearranging, pay special attention to areas you might not have thought could be used for storage coming to your attention. There are plenty of ways to turn awkward corners and spaces of your home into usable space by adding corner storage shelves. Consider this as you begin to map out your new garage layout.

Use the Ceiling, Not the Floor

Too often it feels easier to try to organize the garage from the floor up, not the ceiling down. By using the ceiling to store items by hanging them up, you can maximize both your storage space and your navigable space in the garage.

Consider hanging as many of your items as you can from the ceiling, such as bicycles, winter gear, ropes and harnesses, and even tools. You can also install a large net to hang from certain areas of the ceiling, then keep extra blankets, sleeping bags, and other soft items up there for easy access.

Install New Storage Cabinets and Shelves

If you have a lot of clutter in your garage, there are two main ways to organize and store away items: cabinets and shelving.

Installing cabinets along the walls with a countertop underneath or on top of your cabinets will allow you to stow away your smaller items, boxes, and containers.

Adding a countertop below or above your cabinets will give you extra surface area to work with. A carefully planned countertop addition can also make for a fantastic desk spot if you’re in need of modern man cave ideas and if you have the space for it.

To really maximize storage space, heavy-duty shelves are a must. Big, sturdy shelves will allow you to stow away larger boxes and bins, such as your camping gear or Christmas decorations.
